ಸರಯೂ ನದಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಕೋಸಲ'ವೆಂಬ ದೇಶವಿದೆ.ಅದು ಫಲಭರಿತ, ಸಂಪದ್ಭರಿತ, ಸಮೃದ್ಧ - ಸಂತುಷ್ಟ ಭರಿತ ಜನರಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದ ದೇಶ.ತ್ರಿಲೋಕ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾದ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯೆ ಅದರ ರಾಜಧಾನಿ.ಇದನ್ನು ಮನು ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಯು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ್ದನು.ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಅಭೇದ್ಯವಾದ ಕೋಟೆಯಿತ್ತು.ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಶತ್ರುನಾಶಕವಾದ ಶತಘ್ನಿ ಎಂಬ ನೂರಾರು ಯಂತ್ರಗಳಿದ್ದವು.ಸಹಜವಾಗಿಯೇ ಅದು ಗೆಲ್ಲಲಾಗದ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ನಗರ.ಉದ್ಯಾನ,ಮನೆ, ಮಂದಿರ, ರಾಜಭವನ, ಅಂಗಡಿ ಮುಂಗಟ್ಟುಗಳು,ಕಲಾಮಂದಿರಗಳು...ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿದ್ದವು.ಒಂದೇ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವುದಿದ್ದರೆ ದೇಶ ವಿದೇಶಗಳ ಜನರು ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಮಾಡಿ ಬಂದು ನೋಡಿ ಹೋಗುವ ಆದರ್ಶ ನಗರ.

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕು ಮಹಾರಾಜನ ವಂಶದ ದಶರಥ ಕೋಸಲದೇಶದ ರಾಜನಾಗಿದ್ದನು.ಅವನು ಹಾಗೂ ಅವನ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಮರ್ತ್ಯ ಪಾತಾಳ - ಈ ಮೂರೂ ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿ.ಚತುರಂಗ ಬಲಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಅವನು ಆ ವಂಶದಲ್ಲೇ ಆ ತನಕದ ರಾಜರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯಭಾರ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದನು. 

ಅವನಿಗೆ ಸುಮಂತ್ರನೇ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಎಂಟು ಮಂದಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಮರ್ಥರಾದ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳಿದ್ದರು.ವಸಿಷ್ಠ ವಾಮದೇವ ಗೌತಮ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಅವನ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು, ಪುರೋಹಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.ಅವನ ಸಮರ್ಥ ಆಡಳಿತದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಇಡೀ ಕೋಶಲ ದೇಶ ಸುಭಿಕ್ಷವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

There was a country named 'Kosala' situated on the shore of the 'Sarayu' river.

The country was renowned for its fortune, richness and fertile lands. Moreover People were leading a good and happy life with contentment. The capital of this country was 'Ayodhya ' which was well known to all and built by Manu Chakravarti. It was surrounded by the strongest fort that no body could break that. In other words we can say it had an unbreachable fort. Not only that ,there were many weapons or machines on the fort called 'Shathagni' ( can be called as missile)to attack and destroy external enemy forces . So it was a Hercules task for anyone to attack and fortify strongly built and guarded 'Ayodhya '. Ayodhya was called 'an Ideal city '.In other words it was like a tourist place because one could see splendor everywhere there. It possessed extraordinary things such as beautiful park ,garden, houses, temple ,palace, shops ,theaters and many other things. 

The country Kosala was Reigned and monitored by the King Dhasharatha who hails from the clan of Ikshvaku. He and his kindom was popular in the three world ,swarga ,martya and Naraka( Heaven, mortal or humanity,and hell). His kingdom had a powerful army consisting of chariots, elephants  horses and infantry .During the  period of his reign the kingdom had reached the supremacy and was being glorified. He also proved himself an efficient ruler of Kosala country .And he was known to be the best ruler of Kosala so far.

Dhasharatha had a team of 8 efficient ministers including Sumanthra, Vasishta and Vasudeva. He was guided by the great Maharshis and priests such as Vamadeva,Gauthama and others.

The king Dhasharatha administered Kosala efficiently that the subject never faced scarcity of food and other necessary things and the country remained prosperous.
