ರಾಮಾಯಣ ಹಕ್ಕಿನೋಟ-೧೫

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕು ವಂಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಗರ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ರಾಜ.ಗರ(ವಿಷ) ಸಹಿತ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಕಾರಣ ಸಗರ.ಸಗರನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಸಾಗರ.ಅವನು ಅಶ್ವಮೇಧ ಯಾಗವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ತೊಡಗಿದನು.ಬಹಳ ವಿಜೃಂಭಣೆಯಿಂದ ಯಾಗವು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.ಅಶ್ವಮೇಧ ಯಜ್ಞದ ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ದೇಶ ಪರ್ಯಟನೆಗೆ ಅಂಶುಮಂತನ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ್ದನು.ಇನ್ನೇನು ಯಾಗ ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು ಎಂದಿರುವಾಗ ಇಂದ್ರನು ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ಅಪಹರಿಸಿ ರಸಾತಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟನು.ಸಗರನು ತನ್ನ ಶೂರರಾದ ಅರುವತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ ಮಕ್ಕಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ ತರಲು ಹೇಳಿದನು.ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಯಾಗವು ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲೇ ನಿಂತರೆ ಮಾಡುವವರಿಗೂ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದವರಿಗೂ ಕೇಡು ಉಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಗರನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಭೂಮಂಡಲವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಜಾಲಾಡಿದರೂ ಕುದುರೆಯ ಸುಳಿವಿಲ್ಲ.ಕೊನೆಗೆ ತಂದೆಯ ಅನುಮತಿ ಪಡೆದು ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಅಗೆದು ರಸಾತಳಕ್ಕೆ ತಲುಪಿದರು.ಅಲ್ಲಿ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಪಿಲ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದ್ರನು ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಹಾಕಿದ್ದನು.ತಪೋನಿರತ ಕಪಿಲರಿಗೆ ಇದು ಗೊತ್ತೇ ಆಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.ಕಪಿಲರನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದ ಸಗರಪುತ್ರರು ಅವರನ್ನು ಪೀಡಿಸಿದರು.ಇದರಿಂದ ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡ ಕಪಿಲರು ಹೂಂಕರಿಸದ್ದೇ ತಡ ಅರುವತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ ಮಕ್ಕಳೂ ಸುಟ್ಟು ಬೂದಿಯಾದರು.

ಇತ್ತ ತನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣದಾದಾಗ ಸಗರನು ಮೊಮ್ಮಗ ಅಂಶುಮಂತನನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಲು ಕಳಿಸಿದನು.ಅವನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಕಪಿಲ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಸುಟ್ಟು ಬೂದಿಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ತನ್ನ ಚಿಕ್ಕಪ್ಪಂದಿರ ಭಸ್ಮರಾಶಿಯ ಸಮೀಪಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದನು.ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾಗಾಶ್ವವನ್ನೂ ಕಂಡನು.ನಿಜ ಅರಿವಾಗಿ ದು:ಖಿಸಿದನು.ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತರ್ಪಣ ನೀಡಲು ನೀರನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವಾಗ ಗರುಡನು ಕಂಡುಬಂದನು.ಗರುಡನು-ಶಾಪಗ್ರಸ್ತರಾದ ಇವರ ಸದ್ಗತಿಗೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜಲ ಸಾಲದು. ದೇವಗಂಗೆಯ ನಿರ್ಮಲ ಜಲವೇ ಆಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು.ನೀನೀಗ ಯಾಗಾಶ್ವದೊಡನೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿ ಯಜ್ಞವನ್ನು ಸಮಾಪ್ತಿಗೊಳಿಸು,ಬಳಿಕ ಸದ್ಗತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮಾಡು- ಎಂದು ಸಲಹೆಯಿತ್ತನು.ಅಂಶುಮಂತನು ಹಾಗೇ ಮಾಡಿದನು.

ಯಾಗ ಪರಿಸಮಾಪ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು.

ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಮರಣದಿಂದ ನೊಂದ ಸಗರನು ಸದ್ಗತಿಗಾಗಿ ಗಂಗೆಯನ್ನು ತರುವ ದಾರಿ ಕಾಣದೆ ಅಂಶುಮಂತನಿಗೆ  ಆ ಹೊಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿದನು.

Sagara was a renowned king of Ikshvaku clan. Since he was born with Gara which means Venom, he was named sagara which later altered to Saagara. Saagara made a decision of performing Ashwamedha yaga. The ritual was going on resplendently. The horse which was to be used in the ritual had sent for the journey around the country under the protection of Anshumantha. But when the ritual was about to end the horse was abducted by Indra and he hid the horse in subterranean region(Rasaathala). Saagara ordered his 60,000 mighty children to go in search of the horse and bring it back. Because incompletion of the ritual may cause many problems later. 

Though the children of Saagara searched for the horse in every corner of the earth they couldn't find that. Later by taking the permission of Saagar they digged the earth and reached Rasaathal .They found the ritual horse which was being tied beside Kapila Maharshi who was meditating. Kapila Maharshi had no clues about what had happened since he was engrossed in meditation. He was unaware of the deed of Indra. Sagara's children assumed that the horse was abducted by Kapila Maharshi and began to distract and disturb him which made him furious. Within a minute,  the 60,000 Sagara's children were burnt into ashes for the rage of Kapila Maharshi. 

Saagara had been waiting for his sons to come back along with the horse. When there was no sign of their coming he  sent his grandson Anshumantha in search of them. After coming so far he could find the way into Rasaathala and reached the place where there was a heap of ashes. And then his eyes caught hold of the horse which was being tied. When he realized that his uncles were burnt into ashes he broke into tears and mourned for their deaths.

Anshumantha with a heavy heart, started searching for water to perform the last rites of his dead uncles to give salvation to their souls. At the same time he saw Garuda who told him that his uncles were cursed and they would not get salvation without the water of sacred Ganga. Since it was getting late for the ritual, Garuda adviced Anshumantha to go back with the horse to the place where the yajna was going on and suggested him to perform the last rites of his uncles later. Anshumantha did as Garuda said. Finally Ashwamedha was completed successfully. 

But Saagara was heart  broken when he heard about the demise of his children. He failed to bring the sacred Ganga to give them salvation. Saagara went to heaven by giving the responsibility of bringing Ganga down to Anshumantha.
