ರಾಮಾಯಣ ಹಕ್ಕಿನೋಟ-೧೬

ಅಂಶುಮಂತನು ಸಗರನ ಉತ್ತರಾಧಿಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನಾಳಿದನು.ತನ್ನ ಮಗ ದಿಲೀಪನಿಗೆ ಪಟ್ಟ ಕಟ್ಟಿ ತಾನು ಗಂಗಾವತರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಲು ತೆರಳಿದನು.ವಿಫಲನಾಗಿ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋದನು.ಅವನ ಮಗ ದಿಲೀಪನೂ ಇದೇ ದಾರಿ ಹಿಡಿದು ಮಗ ಭಗೀರಥನಿಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ತಪಗೈದು ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ಥನಾದನು.

ಭಗೀರಥನು ಪರಮಧಾರ್ಮಿಕನು.ಅವನಿಗೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.ಇದರಿಂದ ಚಿಂತಿತನಾದ ಅವನು ಸಂತತಿಗಾಗಿ ಗೋಕರ್ಣ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಕುರಿತು ಘೋರ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದನು.ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಭಗೀರಥನ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೊಲಿದು ಏನು ಬೇಕು ಎಂದಾಗ ಭಗೀರಥನು ದೇವಾ-ನನಗೆ ಪುತ್ರ ಭಾಗ್ಯ ಕರುಣಿಸು ಹಾಗೂ ನನ್ನ ಪಿತೃಗಳಿಗೆ ಸದ್ಗತಿ ದೊರಕಿಸಲು ಗಂಗಾವತರಣವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಆದೇಶಿಸು-ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿದನು.ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಗೆ ಅಸ್ತು ಎಂದ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಎರಡನೆಯ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಗೆ ಶಿವನನ್ನು  ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಲು ಹೇಳಿದನು.ಗಂಗೆ ದೇವಲೋಕದಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿ ಧರಣಿಯನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಾಧ್ಯ-ಎಂದು ಆಶೀರ್ವದಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿದನು.

ಲೋಕಹಿತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪಿತೃಗಳ ಸದ್ಗತಿಗಾಗಿ ಶಿವನ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಶಿವನು ಬೇಗನೇ ಒಲಿದನು.ಭಗೀರಥನ ಇಚ್ಛೆಯಂತೆ ಗಂಗೆಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಶಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ಧರಿಸಲು ಒಪ್ಪಿದನು.ಗಂಗಾವತರಣವಾಯಿತು.ದೇವಲೋಕದ ಗಂಗೆಗೆ ಇಳೆಗಿಳಿಯುವ  ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಮನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅಹಂಕಾರ ಸುಳಿಯಿತು.ತಾನೇಕೆ ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಲು ನಿಂತ ಶಂಕರನನ್ನು ಸೆಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಪಾತಾಳಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಬಾರದು?-ಎಂದು.ಗಂಗೆಯ ಇಂಗಿತವನ್ನರಿತ ಶಂಕರನು ಆಕೆ ತನ್ನ ಶಿರವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿದೊಡನೆ ಹೊರಬಾರದಂತೆ ನಿರ್ಬಂಧಿಸಿದನು.ಗಂಗೆಯ ಹಮ್ಮು ಇಳಿಯಿತು.ಆದರೆ ಆಕೆ ಸಗ್ಗದಿಂದಿಳಿದ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಉಳಿಯಿತು.

ಕಾಲ ಉರುಳಿತು.ಭಗೀರಥನ ಸತತ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಒಲಿದ ಶಿವನು ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಗಂಗೆಯನ್ನು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿತವಾದ ಬಿಂದು ಸರೋವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟನು.ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಗಂಗೆ ಏಳು ಪ್ರವಾಹಗಳ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿದಳು.ಏಳನೆಯ ಪ್ರವಾಹವೇ ಭಗೀರಥನನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸಿದ ಗಂಗೆ.ಮುಂದೆ ಮುಂದೆ ರಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಗೀರಥ; ಹಿಂದೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಹರಿದು ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಗಂಗೆ.ಆಕೆಯ ವೇಗವನ್ನು ಅಹಂಕಾರವೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿದ ಮಹಾನ್ ತಪಸ್ವಿ ಜಹ್ನು ಮಹರ್ಷಿಯು ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಕುಡಿದುಬಿಟ್ಟನು.ಇದನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಋಷಿಗಳು ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಅವನ ಮನವನ್ನು ಒಲಿಸಿ ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬಿಡುವಂತೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಸಿದರು.ಒಲಿದ ಮುನಿಯು ಆಕೆ ಅಶುದ್ಧಳಾಗಬಾರದೆಂದು ತನ್ನ ಎರಡೂ ಕಿವಿಗಳಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಿಟ್ಟನು.ಇದರಿಂದಾಗಿ ಗಂಗೆ ಜಾಹ್ನವಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಳಾದಳು.ಬಳಿಕ ಗಂಗೆ ದೇವಗಂಗೆ ಭಗೀರಥನನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ರಸಾತಳಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅವನ ಮುತ್ತಜ್ಜಂದಿರ ಭಸ್ಮವನ್ನು ಮುಳುಗಿಸಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸದ್ಗತಿಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಲು ಸಹಕರಿಸಿದಳು.ಭಗೀರಥನು ಕೊನೆಗೂ ತನ್ನ ಪಿತೃಗಳು ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಪಡೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಕೃತಾರ್ಥನಾದನು,ಧನ್ಯನಾದನು.

ಇದೇ ಭಗೀರಥ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ.ಇಂದೂ ನಮ್ಮ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಲಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪರಮ ಪಾವನವಾದ ನುಡಿಮುತ್ತು.ಪುರುಷ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದ ಶಬ್ದರೂಪ.

As being the decedent of Saagara, Anshumantha ruled the kingdom very efficiently. But  later he coronated his son Dileepa and left the kingdom to bring down Ganga or for the Gangaavatarana. But  he could not succeed in his attempt so he went to the heaven . His son Dileepa too followed the footprints of his father. He crowned his son Bhagiratha the king and left for the heaven after going through the penance to bring down Ganga.

Bhagiratha was very religious .He had no children which became the source of his unhappiness in life. Therefore he went to Gokarna Kshetra to perform hard penance to beget children by pleasing the lord Brahma . Brahma was pleased by his dedication and appeared before him .Brahma asked him what he wished for and Bhagiratha requested Brahma to bless him with children and also to help him to bring Ganga down to perform the last rites of his ancestors. 

But Brahma granted his first wish only and for his second wish ,he adviced Bhagiratha to worship and please the Lord Shiva as he was the ultimate power to protect the earth from being devastated by the violent flow of Ganga from the heaven. By saying this he blessed Bhagiratha and dissapeared from there.

Bhagiratha decided to perform an arduous penance to please the lord Shiva.

He engrossed himself in the penance for the welfare of the world and to give salvation for the souls of his dead ancestors. The Lord shiva was pleased and appeared before Bhagiratha. As per the wish of Bhagiratha, Shiva agreed to take  Ganga on his head. But when it was the time to descend into the earth ,Ganga had the intention of flowing over  Lord Shiva arrogantly and dragging him into the Paathaal. But Lord Shiva was aware of her intention. So he trapped Ganga in his headlocks when she flowed down violently on his head. But unfortunately the purpose behind Gangaavatarana remained unfulfilled. 

The time had passed but Bhagiratha never gave up trying. He had performed a penance again through which he pleased the Lord Shiva again. As per the wish of Bhagiratha, Shiva let Ganga flow in Bindu lake ,built by Lord Brahma. From there she flowed in the form of seven floods and the 7th flood was the Ganga which Bhagiratha followed. Ganga was flowing with force behind Bhagiratha who was moving forward in his chariot . But her force was misunderstood as arrogance by the great ascetic Jahnu Maharshi and imbibed her completely out of anger.

The sages who were witnessing this ,prayed Jahnu Maharshi to liberate Ganga. Jahnu Maharshi was convinced and decided to let her flow through his ears so that she would not be polluted. Since she flowed from the ears of Jahnu Maharshi ,she earned the name Jaahnavi. 

Finally Bhagiratha succeeded in his attempt of bringing Ganga down. Bhagiratha went into Rasaasthal with Ganga. Ganga assisted Bhageeratha to perform the last rites of his ancestors by flowing on the ashes. Bhageeratha felt grateful after performing his duty. His constant efforts brought him solace. 

This is what we call 'Bhageeratha Prayathna' (The efforts of Bhageeratha) which has become a well known proverb now.
