ಚ್ಯವನ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳ ಆಸರೆ ಆತಿಥ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆದ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನಿಗೆ ಅವರು ಲವಣಾಸುರನ ಬಲವನ್ನು,ಅವನ ಶಕ್ತ್ಯಾಯುಧದ ಹಿರಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದರು.ಅದರಿಂದಲೇ ಲವಣನು ಸಂಹರಿಸಿದ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯೆಯ ರಾಜನಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮಾಂಧಾತನ ಕುರಿತು ವಿವರಿಸಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು.ಇರುಳು ಕಳೆದು ಬೆಳಗಾಯಿತು. ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನು ಬೆಳಗಿನ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು, ಸಂಧ್ಯಾವಂದನೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸಿ ಚ್ಯವನರಿಂದ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಮಧುವನದತ್ತ ಹೊರಟನು. ಅದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಲವಣಾಸುರನು ಆಹಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಗರದಿಂದ ಕಾಡಿನತ್ತ ಹೊರಟನು.

ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನು ಮಧುಪುರದ ಮಹಾದ್ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಲವಣನನ್ನೆದುರಿಸಲು ಬಿಲ್ಲನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಸಿದ್ಧನಾದನು.

ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಲವಣ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನನ್ನು ಕಂಡೊಡನೆಯೇ ಸಿಟ್ಟಿಗೆದ್ದ.

ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ನೀನೇ ನನಗೆ ಆಹಾರವಾಗಿ ಬಂದೆಯಲ್ಲಾ ಎಂದು ಹಂಗಿಸಿದ. ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನು ಅವನನ್ನು ದ್ವಂದ್ವ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ  ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸಿದನು.ಆಗ ಲವಣನು ಆಯುಧಗಳನ್ನು ತರುತ್ತೇನೆ ಕಾದಿರು ಎಂದಾಗ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನು ಒಪ್ಪದೆ ಯುದ್ಧಾರಂಭಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆದನು.ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನನ್ನು ಹಗುರವಾಗಿ ಕಂಡ ಲವಣನು ಶಕ್ತ್ಯಾಯುಧದ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಬಗೆದು ಯುದ್ಧವನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದನು. ಸಮಸಮವಾಗಿ ಯುದ್ಧ ನಡೆಯತೊಡಗಿತು. ಯುದ್ಧದ ಒಂದು ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಲವಣಾಸುರನ ಕೈಮೇಲಾಗುವಂತೆ ಕಂಡಿತು.ಕೂಡಲೇ ಎಚ್ಚೆತ್ತುಕೊಂಡ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನು ರಾಮನಿತ್ತ ದಿವ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬಿಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೂಡಿದನು.ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಋಷಿಗಳು ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ ಹೆದರಿದರು. ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಆತಂಕವನ್ನು ನಿವೇದಿಸಿದರು.  ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು  ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಜಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನ ಸಾಹಸವನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಹೇಳಿದನು.ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ನೋಡನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಂತೆಯೇ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನು ಲವಣಾಸುರನ ಎದೆಗೆ ದಿವ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ರವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಯೋಗಿಸಿದನು. ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ಪೂರೈಸಿದ ದಿವ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ರವು ಮರಳಿ   ಬಂದು ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನ ಬತ್ತಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿತು.

 ಲವಣಾಸುರನ ವಧೆಯಾಯಿತು.ಋಷಿಗಳು ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಹರ್ಷೋದ್ಗಾರ ಮಾಡಿದರು.ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನನನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡಾಡಿದರು. ಲವಣನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ದಿವ್ಯವಾದ ಶೂಲಾಯುಧವು ರುದ್ರನಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ತೆರಳಿತು.

After accepting the hospitality and shelter of Chyavana Maharshi, Shatrughna came to know about the strength of Lavanaasura and the greatness of his artillery Shaktyayudha by Chyavana Maharshi. He explained about Maandhaatha who had been the king of Ayodhya and who was killed by Lavanaasura with the same artillery. The night slipped and the sun rose.

After completing the morning chores and performing Sandhyavandanam, Shatrughna travelled towards ' Madhuvana ' by taking the blessings of Chyavana. During the same time Lavanaasura set off towards the forest from the city in search of food.

Shatrughna equipped himself with the bow to confront Lavanaasura at the great entrance of ' Madhupura'. Lavanaasura who came with thousands of animals, became furious the moment he saw Shatrughna. He mocked at Shatrughna by giving a guffaw and said that Shatrughna himself came to him as a prey. Shatrughna invited him for the duel. During the time Lavanaasura asked Shatrughna to wait till he brought the artillery. But Shatrughna without agreeing for that, asked him to begin the war. Lavanaasura began the war by looking down to Shatrughna and by assuming that there would not be any need of the artillery Shaktyayudha to face him. There was an equal fight between the two. At one point of time, it seemed as if Lavanaasura was getting upper hand in the battle. Shatrughna who became alert soon, inserted the divine artillery which was given by Rama, to the bow . Even the sages and the gods feared for that. They expressed their fear with Brahma. Brahma consoled them and asked them to go to the place where the battle was taking place and to witness the adventure of Shatrughna. As everyone was watching, Shatrughna tried out the divine artillery aiming at the chest of Lavanaasura. The divine artillery which fulfilled its duty successfully returned to the quiver of Shatrughna. 

Lavanaasura got slayed. The sages and the gods overjoyed and expressed their cheerful jubilation  . They praised Shatrughna to the skies. The divine artillery ' Shoolaayudha ' which was there with Lavanaasura went to Rudra.
