ಶ್ರೀರಾಮಾಯಣ ಹಕ್ಕಿನೋಟ -೧೬೭

ಶೂನ್ಯ ಲಂಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕುಬೇರನು ಆಳತೊಡಗಿದ.

ಕೈಕಸಿ ಸುಮಾಲಿಯ ಮಗಳು. ಸುಂದರಾಂಗಿ.ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಅಪೇಕ್ಷೆಯಂತೆ ಕುಬೇರನಂತಹ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ವಿಶ್ರವಸನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದಳು.

ಅದು ಪ್ರದೋಷ ಕಾಲ.

ಮಂಗಳಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೂಕ್ತವಾದ ಕಾಲವಲ್ಲ.ಆದರೂ ವಿಶ್ರವಸನು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದನು.

ಹತ್ತು ತಲೆಗಳುಳ್ಳ  ಮೊದಲ ಮಗನನ್ನು ಹೆತ್ತಳು.

ಹುಟ್ಟುವಾಗಲೇ ಅಶುಭಶಕುನಗಳು ತೋರಿ ಬಂದವು.ವಿಶ್ರವಸನು ಆ ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ದಶಗ್ರೀವ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟ.ಎರಡನೆಯ ಮಗನೇ ಮಹಾಶರೀರಿಯಾದ ಕುಂಭಕರ್ಣ. ಇವನ ಬಳಿಕ  ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವಳೇ ಶೂರ್ಪನಖಾ.

ಇವರು ಮೂವರೂ ತಾಮಸ ಗುಣಿಗಳು.ಇವರ ನಂತರ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನೇ ಮಹಾನ್ ಸಾತ್ವಿಕ ವಿಭೀಷಣ.ಇವನು ಜನಿಸುವ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಶುಭಶಕುನಗಳು ಗೋಚರಿಸಿದವು.

ರಾವಣ ಕುಂಭಕರ್ಣರಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಸ್ವೇಚ್ಛಾಚಾರಿಗಳಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದರು.

ಕುಂಭಕರ್ಣ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಬಾಕ.

ಹಸಿವಡಗುವದೆಂಬುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳನ್ನೂ ಬಿಡದೇ ತಿನ್ನುವ ಕ್ರೂರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದ.

ಮೂರುಲೋಕಗಳೂ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಹೆದರತೊಡಗಿದವು.

ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಪುಷ್ಪಕ ವಿಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕುಬೇರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಕೈಕಸಿಯು ರಾವಣನಲ್ಲಿ ನೀನೂ ಆ ರೀತಿ ವೈಭವೋಪೇತ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಬಾಳುವಂತಹವನಾಗು ಎಂದಳು.ಅದನ್ನು ಸವಾಲಾಗಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ ದಶಗ್ರೀವನು ತನ್ನ ಸೋದರರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಗೋಕರ್ಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಉಗ್ರ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದನು.ಒಲಿದ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಅವನಿಗೆ ವೈರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಜಯಿಸುವ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ದಯಪಾಲಿಸಿದನು.

ದಶಗ್ರೀವನು ಹತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿದ.ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದೊಂದರಂತೆ ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಅಗ್ನಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದ. ಕೊನೆಯ ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳೊಡಗೂಡಿ ಪಿತಾಮಹನು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷನಾದನು.

ವರವನ್ನು ಕೇಳು ಎಂದಾಗ ಅಮರತ್ವವನ್ನು ಯಾಚಿಸಿದನು.

ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಅಸಾಧ್ಯವೆಂದು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಹೇಳಿದ.ಆಗ ದಶಗ್ರೀವನು- ಗರುಡ-ನಾಗ-ಯಕ್ಷ-ದೈತ್ಯ-ದಾನವ-ರಾಕ್ಷಸ-ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಂದ ವಧಿಸಲ್ಪಡದಿರುವ ವರವನ್ನು ಕೋರಲು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ತಥಾಸ್ತು ಎಂದನು.ಇದರೊಡನೆ ಅಗ್ನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದ ಒಂಬತ್ತು ತಲೆಗಳನ್ನೂ,

ಕಾಮರೂಪನಾಗುವ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ.

ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ವಿಭೀಷಣನಿಗೆ •ಅಮರತ್ವವನ್ನು,

•ಸದಾ ಧರ್ಮ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿರುವುದನ್ನು,

•ನೆನಪಿಸಿದಾಗ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಒದಗಿ ಬರುವ ವರಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದನು.

ಕುಂಭಕರ್ಣನಿಗೆ ವರಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಲು ಹೋದಾಗ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಲ್ಲಿ ಲೋಕಕಂಟಕನಾದ ಆತನಿಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷ ವರಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡದಂತೆ ವಿನಂತಿಸಿದರು.ಆಗ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯನ್ನು ಬರಹೇಳಿ ಕುಂಭಕರ್ಣನ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಪೂರಕವಾದ ವರಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿದ. 

ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತನಾದ ಕುಂಭಕರ್ಣನು ಅನೇಕಾನೇಕ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ  ಮಲಗಿಯೇ ಇರಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ವರವನ್ನು ಕೋರಲು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು  ತಥಾಸ್ತು ಎಂದನು. ಕುಂಭಕರ್ಣನು ಸ್ವಬುದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಾಗ ತನ್ನಿಂದಾದ ಅಚಾತುರ್ಯ ನೆನೆದು ನೊಂದನು.ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣರಾದ ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಳಿದನು.

(ಅಮರತ್ವವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದವರಿಗೆ ವರವಾಗಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದು ಇಲ್ಲವೆನ್ನುವಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆ.ದೇವತೆಗಳು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ವಿಭೀಷಣನಿಗೆ ತಾನಾಗಿಯೇ ಅಮರತ್ವವನ್ನು  ನೀಡಿದರೆ ರಾವಣನು ಕೇಳಿಯೂ ನೀಡಲಿಲ್ಲ!)

Kubera began to rule Lanka which had become vacant. Kaikasi was the daughter of Sumaali who was so beautiful. As per the expectations of her father she went to Vishravasa to beget children like Kubera.

It was an inauspicious time .

It was not the right time for any auspicious work. But still Vishravasa accepted her.

She begot the first son who had 10 heads.

They came out by indicating the inauspicious omens while taking birth itself. The second son was Kumbhakarna who had a giant physique. The one who born after Kumbhakarna was Shoorpanakha. 

These there were known for their vices. The one who born after these three was the pious Vibhishana. By the time he was born, the auspicious omens appeared. 

Ravana and Kumbhakarna grew being self willed. Kumbhakarna was a glutton. 

He was never free from hunger. He grew so cruel that he did not even spare the Maharshis and he was eating them. The three worlds became apprehensive about him.

One day when Kaikasi saw Kubera travelling in 'Pushpaka Vimaana ', she told Ravana to lead the same life of splendor that Kubera was leading. Dashagreeva ( the ten headed) who took her words as a challenge and went to Gokarna along with his brothers and performed an ardent penance. The lord Brahma who was pleased by his penance granted him the efficiency of winning against his enemies. 

Dashagreeva performed penance for 10,000 years. He kept offering the head to Agni by cutting off a head per year. By the time he was offering the last head , Brahma appeared along with the gods. When he told him to ask for boons, Ravana prayed for immortality. But Brahma said that it was impossible. During the time Dashagreeva requested him to grant the boon that he should not get slayed by Eagle - Snake - Yaksha - Giant - Demon - Monster - the gods, for which Brahma too agreed and granted his wish. Along with this, being pleased Brahma granted him the nine heads which Ravana had offered to Agni and granted him the power of assuming any form. 

Brahma granted Vibhishana the boon of 

• immortality, 

• always being on the path of righteousness, 

• obtaining the artillery ' Brahmaastra ' whenever he remembered and needed that.

When Brahma was about to grant boons to Kumbhakarna, the gods requested Brahma not to give any powerful boons to him since he was a trouble monger. During the time Brahma asked Saraswati to reside in the tongue of Kumbhakarna and asked her to ask boons which would favour the gods. Kumbhakarna who was stimulated by Saraswati asked the boon that he should be asleep for many years for which Brahma too agreed. 

When Kumbhakarna regained his rationality, realized the mistake which was done by him and lamented for that. He reproached the gods who were the reason for that.

( Those who asked for immortality, were given less boons. The gods especially Brahma with his own wish granted immortality to Vibhishana though he didn't ask ,but he didn't grant that to Ravana though he had asked !)
