ಶ್ರೀರಾಮಾಯಣ ಹಕ್ಕಿನೋಟ-೬೧

ದಂಡಕಾರಣ್ಯದ ಸುದೀರ್ಘ ವಾಸದ ಬಳಿಕ ರಾಮ ಸೀತೆ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣರು ಸುತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣರ ಅನುಮತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮುನಿಗಳ ಆಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಪಯಣಿಸಿದರು.ಹೋಗುವ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರ ತಮ್ಮನ ಆಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ತಂಗಿದರು.ಹೋಗುವ ದಾರಿಯುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ರಾಮನು ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ, ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿರುವ ಗಿಡ ಮರ-ಬಳ್ಳಿ-ಹೂ- ಹಣ್ಣು-ಹಂಪಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಸಾಗುವ ಪರಿ ಅವರ್ಣನೀಯ.ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿರುವ ಎರಡು ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ರಾಮ ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದನು.

ಕತೆ-೧

ವಿಂಧ್ಯ ಪರ್ವತವು ಎತ್ತರೆತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಇತ್ತು.ಅದರ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಹೆದರಿದ ಸೂರ್ಯನು ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ತನ್ನ ಓಡಾಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಂದೆ ತೊಂದರೆ ಆಗದಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ವಿಂಧ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಆದೇಶಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿದನು.ಅದಕ್ಕೊಪ್ಪಿದ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರು ವಿಂಧ್ಯನನ್ನೇರಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ದಿಕ್ಕಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಲು ಬಂದರು.ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರಿಗೆ ವಿಂಧ್ಯನು ಬಾಗಿ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ಅವನಿಗೆ- ನಾನು ವಯಸ್ಕ.ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹತ್ತಿ ಇಳಿಯಲಾರೆ.ಆದುದರಿಂದ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುವ ತನಕ ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಇರು-ಎನ್ನಲು ಅವನು ಒಪ್ಪಿದನು.ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರು ದಕ್ಷಿಣದಿಂದ ಮರಳಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ!ವಿಂಧ್ಯನು ಬೆಳೆಯಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ!!

ಕತೆ-೨

ಇಲ್ವಲ ವಾತಾಪಿಯರು ರಕ್ಕಸ ಸೋದರರು.ಮಾಯಾವಿಗಳು.ನರಮಾಂಸ ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ಮಾಂಸ ಪ್ರಿಯರು.ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ವೇಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಶ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡು ದಾರಿಹೋಕ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರು ಋಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕರೆದು; ಆತಿಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೀಡುವ ನೆಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.ಅದು ಹೇಗೆಂದರೆ-ಅತಿಥಿಗಳು ಬಂದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ವಾತಾಪಿಯು ಮೇಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು.ತನಗಿರುವ ವಿಶೇಷ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಸಾಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟರೂ ಅವನು ಬದುಕಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು.ಅತಿಥಿಗಳು ಬಂದ ಕೂಡಲೆ ವಾತಾಪಿ ಮೇಕೆಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ವಲನು ಕೊಂದು ಪದಾರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿ ಉಣಬಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು.ಅತಿಥಿಗಳು ಹೊರಡುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಶೀರ್ವದಿಸಿ ಹೊರಡುವುದು ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ.ಇಲ್ವಲನಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮನೆಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುವಾಗ ಅವನು ವಾತಾಪೀ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು.ಆಗ ಅವನು ಉಂಡವರ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯೊಡೆದು ಹೊರಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು.ಅತಿಥಿ ಸತ್ತು ಅವರ ಆಹಾರವಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು.ಇದನ್ನರಿತ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರು ಇವರಿಂದ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರು ಉಳಿಯಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಬಗೆದು ಅವರಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋದರು.ಈ ಹಿಂದಿನಂತೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ನಡೆಯಿತು.ಇಲ್ವಲನು ವಾತಾಪೀ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುವ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರು 'ವಾತಾಪಿ ಜೀರ್ಣೋ ಭವ' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಸವರಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು.ವಾತಾಪಿ ಅವರ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸತ್ತಾಗಿತ್ತು.ಸಿಟ್ಟಿಗೆದ್ದ ಇಲ್ವಲನು ಇವರ ಸಿಟ್ಟಿನ ಬೆಂಕಿಗೆ ಆಹುತಿಯಾದನು.

ಇಂತಹ ಮಹಾಮಹಿಮ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರು ತನ್ನ ಆಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದ ರಾಮ ಸೀತೆ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣರನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸಿದರು.ರಾಮನನ್ನು ಮಹಿಮಾನ್ವಿತನೆಂದು ಬಗೆದು ಪೂಜಿಸಿ ಸತ್ಕರಿಸಿದರು.ರಾಮನೂ ಅದೇ ಭಾವದಿಂದ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು.

After a long stay in Dandakaaranya, Rama ,Seetha and Lakshmana went to the hermitage of the sage Agasthya after taking the consent and guidance of Sutheekshana. On their way towards the hermitage they visited and stayed in the hermitage of the younger brother of Agasthya for a day. The way Rama explained and introduced about the various kinds of tress ,plants, creepers, flowers, and fruits which they saw in the forest throughout the journey is truly unexplainable. 

Rama recounted two stories of Agasthya while they were walking towards Agasthyaashrama.

Story - 1

 

The mountain Vindhya was growing higher and higher each day. The Sun was scared of its growth which might be an impediment for him. He came to Agasthya and told him that Vindhya might be a problem for his movement and requested Agasthya to order Vindhya not to come in his way by growing further. Agasthya, who agreed to the request of the Sun, walked towards the south by climbing up the Vindhya. Vindhya bowed down to Agasthya. During the same time Agasthya told Vindhya that he was unable to climb up and climb down many times since he was too old. He asked Vindya to be in the same height until he returned from the South for which Vindhya agreed.

Agasthya never returned from the South!!

Vindhya never grew further!!

Story - 2

There were two demon brothers named Ilwala and Vaathaapi . They were cannibals or man-eaters especially they craved for the flesh of Brahmans. They used to manipulate Brahmanas and sages by disguising themselves as Brahmanas. They used to build a hermitage and invite passersby sages and Brahmanas in the name of offering them hospitality. Brahmanas and sages were used to be killed by the demons for their flesh once they entered the hermitage. Vaathaapi used to turn himself into a goat soon after the guests entered the hermitage. He had a super natural power of returning into life even after being killed by slashing. So when the guests used to enter the hermitage, Ilwala used to cut the goat Vaathaapi into pieces to prepare feast .It was tradition that guests used to bless those who had offered them hospitality before leaving .In the same way, the sages or Brahmanas while leaving the hermitage of the demon brothers used to bless Ilwala,and used to ask for Vaathaapi when they did not find him there. The time when they used to ask for Vaathaapi, Ilwala used to call his brother by his name. The moment when Vaathaapi was being called ,he used to come out of the stomachs of the guests by splitting their stomachs who had eaten him( goat). Then the two demon brothers used to consume their flesh. 

Agasthya, who came to know that the lives of Brahmanas were in threat, went to the hermitage of the demon brothers with an intention of protecting the Brahmanas. The same procedures was followed by the demons when Agasthya entered the hermitage. But the climax was not the same.

 After enjoying the feast or eating the goat Vaathaapi Agasthya asked for Vaathaapi before leaving. But when it was the time to call Vaathaapi, Agasthya had already recited by running his fingers on the stomach ' Vaathaapi Jeernobhava ' which means let Vaathaapi get digested inside the stomach. As a result ,Vaathaapi died inside the stomach of Agasthya. Ilwala was outraged when Vaathaapi did not come out of the stomach of Agasthya. He went towards Agasthya to attack him .But Ilwala was burnt into ashes with the fire of Agasthya's anger.

Rama, Seetha and Lakshmana were welcomed cordially with all the honor by the same great Agasthya when they visited his hermitage. He honoured Rama with a great reverence and Rama too worshipped Agasthya with all the respect.
